چکیده

Land use impacts of biofuel expansion have attracted considerable attention because of the implications for climate change, the environment, and food supply. To examine these impacts, we set up an economic framework that links input use and land allocation decisions with ethanol and agricultural commodity markets. Crops can be substitutes or complements in supply depending on the relative magnitude of the effects of crop prices on total cropland, land share, and input use. We show that with unregulated free markets, total cropland area increases with ethanol price whether crops are substitutes or complements in supply. Similarly, a higher ethanol subsidy or a higher ethanol mandate will lead to cropland expansion. However, subsidies and mandates have very different land use impacts when there is yield improvement. With ethanol subsidies, higher corn yields from exogenous technical changes lead to cropland expansion. The impact of yield increases for other crops on aggregate land use is ambiguous. With a quantity mandate for ethanol, yield improvement causes total cropland to expand only if crop demand is sufficiently elastic, a condition that is unlikely to hold given an inelastic aggregate food demand.

Impacts of Expanded Ethanol Production on Southern Agriculture

This study analyzes the potential impacts of expanded ethanol production on southern agriculture. Results of regression analysis suggest that acreage planted for field crops (corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat) is inelastic with respect to relative prices. The results provide statistical evidence of potential significant acreage shifts favoring corn over cotton, soybeans, and wheat. Simulations ...

Location, Planting Decisions, and the Marketing of Quality-Differentiated Agricultural Commodities

In a marketing environment, the demand conditions, the costs of shipping and storing grain varieties, the interest rate on farm loans, and the distribution of cropland in the area are important determinants of growers’ planting decisions. In this article, I focus on a market for two quality-differentiated agricultural commodities: one produced with the use of biotechnology and the other, withou...

Impacts of Import Tariff Cuts on the Iranian Labor Market Structure: a Computable General Equilibrium Model Approach

Most debates about the role of tariff cuts on the level of employment and rate of wages in labor market have come out of well-known Hecscher – Ohlin and Stopler – Samuelson (HOS) theorems. Considering the fact that we have divided the workforce into skilled and unskilled labors the present paper assesses the impacts of tariff cuts on labor market indicators in Iran. To address these issues...
